Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is located just 8 miles from Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula. It is only 5 miles long and half a mile wide and the downtown area is small enough to cover by foot....that's its charm, and that is why those who visit it are sure to return. Isla Mujeres has that island magic that grabs hold of you and never lets go. With its rich history, it is no wonder that its captivation continues today.

Isla Mujeres translates to "Island of the Women" and its story is intriguing. In Mayan times, the island was considered a haven for the goddess Ixchel, who was the Mayan Goddess of fertility, medicine and the moon. Statues of women scattered the Island to honor her and when explorer Francisco Hernández Córdoba, came upon the island, he gave Isla Mujeres her name. But the story doesn't end there.

A temple that still remains located at the South point of the island was used as a lighthouse and was lit with torches to guide explorers at sea. Some of these explorers were actually pirates such as Henry Morgan and Jean Lafitte. Not only are there stories of these pirates leaving their women on the island while they went out to sea, but perhaps while digging in the sand......... you may find a hidden treasure.

Regardless of its worldly travelers, Isla Mujeres still remains an enchanted fishing village that welcomes you to enjoy its one of a kind beaches, Caribbean charm, and Mexican hospitality. Don't wait a second longer. Isla Mujeres welcomes you with open arms.
